I definitely feel Alastair's point about intra- vs inter-city travel. A lot of people around here live in the countryside and commute to the county seat--which shares the name of the county. There's definitely a ritual aspect to heading to town and driving home, a morning and evening ritual, and one that has a different significance when you go in at an unusual time. I've missed that when living "in town," though that certainly has its perks.
Glad to see I'm not the only one that felt Dune was "cramped." I actually called it fascistic, which is not a label I usually slap on things, because it's so unrelentingly about power and struggle and control, the attempt to master both humanity and the rest of the universe by violence or technology--if there's a difference. Bringing in those lines was a nice touch, and now it's got my chewing on the importance of wilderness and what a "garden city" means and what the rest of the New Earth as like and so on.
Anyways, great post, and well organized. But FYI, the second power in the numerology doesn't show up as a superscript, so the math looks really bizarre on first glance
Is it really true that 52+62+72=110? Methinks jet lag has indeed been experienced!
Whoops! Those are supposed to be squares, but the superscript format didn't convert. It should be fixed now.
